Ocean-related News
We’ve also added a new section! Alternating with our Women Mind the Water updates there will be ocean-related news stories. These are stories that may answer you might have; for example, the first story was tied to Shark Week. We wondered given the amazing characteristics of sharks, why Shark Week isn’t every week. The story explored some of the myths about sharks. Maybe the most common one is that sharks are the most dangerous predators in the ocean.
The second news story explored the question: Do mermaids exist? The existence of mermaids has long been a subject dating back to the origins of Greek mythology. Women Mind the Water’s story explored a few of the reasons for belief in mermaids.
The most recent news piece dealt with the extensive disappearance of a colorful starfish species known as the Sunflower Sea Star. Women Mind the Water explored the reason for the death of more than five billion, yes BILLION, starfish and what is being done to restore these creatures.

Artivist Series Guests
Speaking of diving deeper into a topic, you might be interested in knowing more about some of the Women Mind the Water Artivist Series guests: Sophie Davis, Dale Andree, Guenola Lefeuvre, and Lisa Blanchard. Articles about these four guests can be found in Maine Women Magazine. Links to the digital editions of the magazine articles are available for violinist and climate change musician Sophie Davis (page 12), climate change dancer and founder of National Water Dance Dale Andree (page 18), porcelain potter Guenola Lefeuvre (page 47), and sea glass artist Lisa Blanchard (page 47).
The latest guest on the Women Mind the Water Artivist Series is conceptual artist Pam Longobardi. Pam, a professor at Georgia State University, explores the relationship between humans and the natural world. Her Drifters Project follows the journey of plastic in the ocean and through nature. In the Artivist Series podcast Pam discusses her work and the importance of art as it relates to pollution and climate change.
Coming soon: a discussion with Pam Chevez and Juliette Sutherland. The women made a film about Portland, Maine’s female surf community. Surfing in Maine is a winter sport. And the surfing culture of women may also be different than what might be expected.
Soon the Women Mind the Water Artivist Series is headed to Paris, France. We will talk with artist, illustrator, and children’s book author Janina Rossiter. We’ll also be headed to British Columbia to talk with seaweed basket maker Cheryl Massey.
We hope you will continue to be part of our community.
