Maine's Surf Gals - Juliette Sutherland and Pam Chevez

Women Mind in Water: Artivist Series Maine's Surf Gals - Juliette Sutherland and Pam Chevez

About Pam Chevez and Juliette Sutherland

Pam Chevez and Juliette Sutherland produced the film Behind the Waves, a documentary about female surfers in Maine. Pam and Juliette met on the water in Maine and decided to combine their creative talents to document the surfing experience through the lens of women. Along the way they built a community of women who love to surf. It is a community that is friendly, supportive, and accessible to women and people of color.

Surfing in Maine, Ocean Connection, and Behind the Waves

Pam Chevez and Juliette Sutherland discuss their experiences surfing in Maine and the motivation behind their film, Behind the Waves. The film explores the connection surfers feel with the ocean and the creative challenges of capturing that relationship on screen.

In Maine, surfing is often a winter sport because that is when surfable waves are more available. During the winter, waves can reach up to seven feet, but they are not consistent. That meant the surfers, Pam, and Juliette had to be ready to drop what they were doing whenever the waves arrived.

Another challenge was that Pam and Juliette approached the filmmaking process from different creative backgrounds. Pam is a designer and animator, while Juliette is an artist and filmmaker. Before they moved into the final production of Behind the Waves, they spent time experimenting with how to tell the story visually and emotionally.

“The film captures what a lot of surfers feel, which is that inherent connection to the ocean. When you are riding on your surfboard, flying down the face of a wave, you are one with the ocean… The act of it is a connecting force.” — Juliette Sutherland

“It’s why the ocean is so important. It’s healing. It’s a space where you can be happy.” — Pam Chevez

Juliette also reflects on the deeper relationship between people and the sea, noting that “we’re not really separate from the ocean.” For her, that connection is why people feel called to protect it. You take care of the place you love.

On the Women Mind the Water Artivist Series podcast, Pam and Juliette share the story behind Behind the Waves, their creative process, and what surfing in Maine reveals about ocean connection, healing, and environmental care. A trailer for Behind the Waves is included in the video podcast.
