Women in Lobster Fishing and the Story Behind Pretty Rugged

Ali, who lives along the central coast of Maine, discusses the research behind her book Pretty Rugged and how the COVID-19 pandemic created unexpected challenges. When the first quarantine began, the seafood market shut down almost overnight. With demand for fish and seafood significantly reduced, many independent small fishing boat operators had to decide whether going out on the water still made financial sense.

For Pretty Rugged, Ali interviewed a wide range of women who fish for a living, including 100-year-old Virginia Oliver, who still regularly fishes for lobster, and Holly Masterson, the fifth generation in her family to work in the fishing industry.

Holly’s story reaches beyond the lobster boat. In addition to fishing, she has held many different jobs, including working for Martha Stewart. Holly helped Stewart host seafood dinners for guests such as Barbra Streisand and James Brolin.

Through these stories, Ali highlights the strength, independence, and resilience of women in lobster fishing. She believes their lives offer an important lesson: “Your life doesn’t have to be a certain way… get out there and take risks and do whatever sets your soul on fire.”

On the Women Mind the Water Artivist Series podcast, Ali shares how Pretty Rugged celebrates women in Maine’s lobster industry and the courage it takes to build a life connected to the sea.
