It’s almost the end of September and the trees here are dressing in fall colors. The calendar is brimming with guest interviews. Among them are a storyteller whose work in the South and the Caribbean has helped protect marine resources; a cartoon artist who also is a researcher and a marine policy fellow in the US Senate; and a seaweed basket maker.

Dianna Cohen is Women Mind the Water’s latest featured artivist. Dianna is a Los Angeles-based visual artist who deconstructs plastic bags to create fine art. She is co-founder of the nonprofit Plastic Pollution Coalition. Dianna’s Women Mind the Water Artivist Series podcast, as well as those of Janina “Nina” Rositter, Pam Chevez and Juliette Sutherland, Pam Logobardi, Krisanne Baker, and Ruth Trevarrow’s are now part of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street collection. And, if you’re interested in learning more about past artivist guests Dale Andree (pg. 18), dancer and founder of National Water Dance, or Sophie Davis (pg. 12), climate change violinist, their stories were featured in the June edition of Maine Women Magazine.

Our next featured guest will be Janavi Kramer, a mixed media artist who cultivates an appreciation of the natural world. She donates proceeds from her work to marine charities like Manta Trust and Shark Guardian. While you’re waiting for Janavi’s podcast check out the latest ocean news posts which is titled What’s the problem with plastic, it’s recyclable. What has this got to do with the ocean? You also may like the other news stories too: Save the Whales? Can the North Atlantic right whale be saved from extinction?
